Dia de los Muertos celebrations go on in South Valley

Attendees expressed some anxiety while mourning loved ones and figures, such as Dolores Huerta who recently passed away.

SOUTH VALLEY, N.M. — The South Valley Dia de los Muertos Marigold Parade gathered the community Sunday to honor loved ones and remember Dolores Huerta.

The full parade returned Sunday after taking a break for a few years. The celebration focused on culture, family and remembrance.

“I just thought it was a wonderful way to celebrate our culture and just social gathering and get to see everybody, you know, dress up together,” said Ava Loya.

This year’s event came after Huerta, the New Mexico-born iconic labor leader, feminist and civil rights icon, died Wednesday.

“And it is important because she is Hispanic and it’s important for me to keep that culture and teachings alive,” said Alicia Apodaca.

Some people noticed a smaller parade this year. Organizers told KOB 4 there were 28 floats instead of the previous 98 because the event can be expensive.

“We’re pretty transparent. So just the celebration and all of our art workshops cost about $12,000. But with the parade and the road closures and the sheriffs, it goes up to $24,000. So it’s a pretty serious funding situation,” said Xavier Avila.

Why did it feel different? The weather wasn’t the best Sunday. Also, for many at the parade, Huerta’s death added meaning to the celebration as people came together to honor loved ones and keep traditions alive.

“There’s no one that brings that kind of hope that she did. We truly stand on her shoulders,” said Yvonne Loya.

People at the parade also remembered family members and friends who had died while celebrating their lives.

“Yes, my baby brother and my best friend for sure. They’re the ones I think of definitely today,” said Anne Gonzales.
