Evacuations ordered in Chama area

CHAMA, N.M. – Village officials ordered a mandatory evacuation in Chama for residents and businesses from Elkhorn Restaurant south to Unser’s at Highway 64/84 Mile Post 164.

The Village of Chama directed people in the affected area to evacuate immediately, according to an emergency alert.

Officials told people not to wait for floodwaters to reach their location and to avoid flooded roads, bridges and low-lying areas.

Officials also told drivers not to try to drive through moving water and to follow all instructions from emergency workers and law enforcement.

People who need a place to go can evacuate to Chama Center, Chama City Hall and the old TA elementary gym.

The alert said people should call 911 if they are in immediate danger.

Village officials also asked people to share the emergency notification to help alert residents in the affected area.
