Albuquerque mother arrested after son allegedly shoots teen

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Police arrested the mother of a 10-year-old boy accused of shooting and killing a 17-year-old girl in northeast Albuquerque.

Shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday, police said several people got into an argument that turned into a physical fight outside the apartment complex, near Tennessee Street. During the fight, a 10-year-old boy tried to pull his mother away but could not.

Police said the boy then went inside an apartment and came back with a handgun. One shot hit a 17-year-old girl and she died at the scene. The boy’s mother then took him into a nearby apartment and called police.

Police said officers heard one gunshot inside the mother’s apartment as they arrived. Officers took cover while several people came out of the apartment.

Police said the mother came out armed with a handgun and one officer fired his handgun. They said that shot did not hit anyone and nobody suffered injuries. Then, she dropped the handgun and surrendered.

They identified the mother as 40-year-old Elaina Gomez-Villeda.

Albuquerque Police Department homicide detectives are investigating the girl’s death. The Multi-Agency Task Force is investigating the officer’s gunfire.
