No. 1 Salesianum faces Middletown, Smyrna looks to strengthen its championship credentials, and Sussex Central meets Caesar Rodney in a critical downstate showdown.

Delaware’s high school football season enters its final stretch this weekend, with several important matchups that could help determine district standings, playoff positioning and which teams are building momentum for a postseason run.

The spotlight will be on three games featuring some of the state’s highest-ranked programs: Salesianum at Middletown on Friday night, Sussex Central at Caesar Rodney on Friday and Smyrna at St. Georges Tech on Saturday morning.

According to MaxPreps’ Oct. 29 rankings, Salesianum and Smyrna hold the top two positions statewide, while Middletown remains No. 3 despite a challenging season. Caesar Rodney and Sussex Central are ranked 10th and 11th, respectively.

The weekend includes 13 varsity games Friday, Oct. 30, and nine more Saturday, Oct. 31.

Salesianum at Middletown: No. 1 Faces a Dangerous Rival

Friday, Oct. 30 | 7 p.m. | Middletown High School

The weekend’s marquee matchup sends top-ranked Salesianum (6-1) to face third-ranked Middletown (3-4) in a game that could reveal plenty about both teams heading toward the playoffs.

Salesianum has established itself as one of Delaware’s leading championship contenders, posting impressive victories over Smyrna, Hodgson Vo-Tech and Appoquinimink. The Sals defeated Appoquinimink 42-7 in their most recent outing.

Middletown’s record is deceptive. The Cavaliers have faced one of Delaware’s most demanding schedules, including games against several highly ranked opponents. Their losses include a narrow 21-19 setback against Sussex Central and a 32-21 defeat to Smyrna.

For Salesianum, a victory would further strengthen its standing as the state’s top-ranked team. For Middletown, upsetting the Sals would provide a signature victory and demonstrate that its difficult schedule has prepared the Cavaliers for postseason competition.

The question: Can Middletown turn its experience against elite competition into an upset of Delaware’s No. 1 team?

Smyrna at St. Georges Tech: Eagles Look to Maintain Momentum

Saturday, Oct. 31 | 11 a.m. | St. Georges Tech, Middletown

Second-ranked Smyrna (6-1) travels to St. Georges Tech (4-3) with an opportunity to continue its impressive season and solidify its position among Delaware’s top Class 3A contenders.

The Eagles have been one of the state’s strongest teams, with their only loss coming against Salesianum, 32-26. Smyrna has demonstrated its offensive strength throughout the season, including a commanding 40-7 victory over Caesar Rodney.

St. Georges Tech, ranked No. 14 statewide, has experienced a more uneven season but remains capable of challenging quality opponents.

The recent history between these programs adds intrigue. St. Georges defeated Smyrna twice in 2024 before the Eagles answered with a decisive 44-12 victory in 2025.

For Smyrna, the objective is maintaining momentum and avoiding a late-season setback. For St. Georges, a victory over the state’s second-ranked team would be a major accomplishment and provide a significant boost to its postseason outlook.

The question: Can St. Georges slow down Smyrna’s high-powered offense and produce one of the weekend’s biggest upsets?

Sussex Central at Caesar Rodney: Downstate Rivals Battle for Position

Friday, Oct. 30 | 7 p.m. | Caesar Rodney High School, Camden

Two evenly matched downstate programs meet Friday night when Sussex Central (5-2) travels to Caesar Rodney (5-2) in a contest with important implications for Class 3A District 2.

Caesar Rodney enters ranked No. 10 statewide, one position ahead of Sussex Central.

The Golden Knights are looking to rebound from a 19-7 loss to Cape Henlopen last weekend. Earlier this season, Sussex Central demonstrated its ability to defeat top competition with a 21-19 victory over Middletown.

Caesar Rodney has also established itself as a postseason contender but faces the challenge of slowing a Sussex Central team eager to regain its winning momentum.

With both programs carrying identical records, the outcome could have an important effect on district positioning and playoff prospects.

The question: Which downstate contender can gain the upper hand in a closely matched Class 3A showdown?

Other Games Worth Watching

Several additional contests deserve attention across the state.

Milford (4-3) travels to St. Mark’s (2-5) at 7 p.m. Friday, hoping to end a three-game losing streak. The Buccaneers opened the season with four consecutive victories but have struggled recently, including a 51-12 loss to Lake Forest last weekend.

Lake Forest (6-1), ranked sixth statewide, visits Laurel (3-4) at 7 p.m. Friday. The Spartans are seeking to extend their strong season as postseason competition approaches.

Hodgson Vo-Tech (2-6) travels to fourth-ranked Appoquinimink (4-3) at 7 p.m. Friday, while ninth-ranked Cape Henlopen (6-1) hosts Dover (2-5) at the same time.

Saturday also features fifth-ranked Howard (6-1) at Wilmington Friends (4-2), another matchup involving a highly ranked team seeking to strengthen its playoff position.

With the regular season winding down, every victory becomes increasingly important. This weekend’s results should help clarify which teams are ready to make a serious run at a Delaware state championship.
