Cambodia protests Thailand’s continued violations of its sovereignty and territorial integrity

The Cambodian government has lodged a formal protest against Thailand following fresh military operations along their shared frontier, urging Bangkok to halt unilateral activities and restore diplomatic stability.

According to an official statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Thai armed forces deployed heavy machinery on October 15 to construct a road in the Ta Tum sector of Anlong Veng district, within Oddar Meanchey province. The activity took place between Boundary Pillars 9, 10, and 11. Diplomatic officials added that Thai personnel subsequently marked trees with red paint between Boundary Pillars 10 and 11 on October 17 in preparation for further roadworks.

Cambodian authorities condemned the action as a direct violation of territorial boundaries defined by early 20th-century international agreements. Official mapping relies on the 1:200,000-scale charts produced by the Delimitation Commissions between Indo-China and Siam under the Franco-Siamese Convention of 1904 and the Treaty of 1907.

The foreign ministry stated that the border works breach Article 5 of the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding on Land Boundary Survey and Demarcation, as well as de-escalation protocols agreed during the Joint Border Committee meeting in December 2025.

The administration reaffirmed that it rejects all territorial lines asserted unilaterally by Thai authorities, maintaining that past actions do not compromise diplomatic or legal positions under international law. Cambodian representatives called for an immediate cessation of unauthorized operations to reduce bilateral friction and preserve stability.

In its concluding remark, Phnom Penh reiterated its commitment to settling boundary differences through peaceful negotiation, adding that established international frontiers must not be altered by physical force.
