Wheatley: Payment networks remain operational following JETS cyberattack

Technology Minister, Dr. Andrew Wheatley, is seeking to reassure Jamaicans that the country’s online payment networks remain operational following the cyberattack on JETS Limited, the company that operates the Multi-Link debit card and the Automated Clearing House, or ACH, networks.

JETS says the attack may have exposed some card numbers from historical administrative data on the debit network, as well as the names of some customers who received transfers through ACH.

In a statement on Friday, Dr. Wheatley says JETS has reported that suspicious activity was detected in a limited part of its internal administrative systems, which were promptly isolated, and that a forensic investigation is under way with specialist consultants.

He says JETS has confirmed that the MultiLink and ACH payment networks were not compromised and continue to operate normally.

But he notes that PINs, card verification values or CVVs and card expiry dates are not stored in the affected systems and were not exposed.

Dr. Wheatley points out that the country’s payment networks are functioning and customers can continue to use their debit cards and make ACH payments as normal.

He has commended JETS for detecting and containing this incident quickly and for informing the public, the Bank of Jamaica, the Office of the Information Commissioner, the police and its member institutions.
