President of the Jamaica Football Federation, JFF, Michael Ricketts, welcomes the announcement of FIFA’s inaugural Women’s Club World Cup, expressing hope that at least one Jamaican club will qualify for the historic competition.
The first edition of the tournament is scheduled to take place in the United States from January 5-30, 2028.
It will bring together 19 clubs from across the world in a competition designed to showcase women’s club football on the global stage.
Orane Buchanan tells us more.
English club Arsenal have been confirmed as one of seven teams already named for the tournament.
They will be joined by Barcelona of Spain, Gotham FC of the United States, Club America of Mexico, Corinthians of Brazil, Naegohyang of North Korea and Wuhan Jiangda of China.
The remaining 12 places are yet to be determined, leaving room for clubs from several confederations to secure qualification.
Under the planned allocation, six additional European clubs will represent UEFA, while AFC, CAF, Concacaf and CONMEBOL will each receive three places.
The Oceania Football Confederation will have one representative.
JFF president, Michael Ricketts, says the prospect of competing in the tournament would represent a significant opportunity to raise the profile of Jamaica’s women’s club football and provide local players with valuable international exposure.
The Women’s Club World Cup is intended to follow a format similar to FIFA’s revamped men’s competition and will be staged every four years.
The announcement also marks another step in FIFA’s expansion of international women’s club competitions.
It follows the introduction of the Women’s Champions Cup, which was held for the first time in February and won by Arsenal.
