Phnom Penh women weigh in on military service (VIDEO)

The government is enforcing the conscription law, requiring men aged 18 to 25 to complete two years of military service while allowing women to enlist voluntarily. Khmer Times reporter Cheab Angsocheata and photographer Pann Rachana speak with female residents of Phnom Penh to find out whether they are willing to join the army to serve their country.

Srey Norng, 21

I think it’s good, and it will help our nation a lot. I’m considering volunteering for military service. If I get the chance to serve, I would do it. Given the recent conflicts, getting military training would be great. That way, if war breaks out again, we will have more volunteers ready.”

Ryma, 18

It is a good idea because we are currently at war, so military training would strengthen national defence. But I want to concentrate on my studies for now because I have goals and dreams I want to achieve. But I’d love to volunteer for military service if I get the chance.”

Dane, 20

I think it’s important to have more soldiers in a time of war. But I want to focus on my studies first, so I can’t serve right now. I’m leaving this to the men for now while I study hard so that I can contribute to our country in a different way.”

Chheang Sreynouch, 18

I want to volunteer to serve in the military because I want to contribute to our nation. Since we’re at war right now, it could really help. I want to volunteer, but I’m still studying. I finish in two years, so I can’t join just yet.”

Phen Boney, 18

This is still new as we’ve just implemented the military service law. But it is important to allow women to volunteer. I can’t right now, but in a few years, once I finish studying law, I plan to volunteer.”

Sok Leang, 20

I can’t volunteer right now because I have school.”
