A suspicious envelope sent to state election officials promoted a swift emergency response from Capital City Fire Rescue over the weekend.
On Oct. 17, CCFR’s Hazardous Materials (hazmat) Team was activated in response to an envelope addressed to the Alaska Division of Elections that may have contained an unknown white powder. The FBI had notified CCFR on Friday of the potential arrival of the envelope.
“Through advance coordination with our federal partners, precautionary measures were established to ensure a safe response,” CCFR stated.
Once the envelope arrived at the post office Saturday morning, the hazmat team safely retrieved and secured it for the FBI.
The contents of the envelope have yet to be confirmed, and CCFR’s response is being conducted out of an abundance of caution. The FBI is investigation similar reports of letters with suspicious substances being mailed to election offices across the country.
“The safety of our community, emergency responders, and those potentially affected remains our highest priority,” CCFR stated. “We appreciate the coordination and professionalism of our hazmat personnel and federal partners in addressing this situation.”
CCFR added that additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
