Cambodia, Thailand Agree on Confidence-Building Measures at Second UNCLOS Conciliation Meeting

Cambodia and Thailand have agreed on confidence-building measures aimed at fostering mutual trust and confidence and facilitating an equitable and amicable solution in accordance with international law during the second meeting of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) Conciliation Commission in The Hague, the Netherlands.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the meeting took place from October 14 to 18.

The Commission encouraged both countries to fully and effectively implement the agreed measures, which are vital to advancing the conciliation process. Under the measures, both parties recognise their right to make statements to protect their legitimate rights or correct factual misinformation and disinformation.

The Commission also noted that agreements and measures previously reached by Cambodia and Thailand have not yet been fully implemented. It encouraged both parties to implement these existing agreements and measures to help create an environment conducive to constructive negotiations within the conciliation process.

The Commission’s third meeting with both parties is scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from November 24 to 27.

The Cambodian delegation expressed its deep appreciation to the Commission and the Permanent Court of Arbitration for their continued efforts to facilitate constructive discussions between the two parties and help them reach agreement on the confidence-building measures.

The Commission will issue its original press release on the outcomes of the second meeting in due course. AKP
