After Netanyahu Claims he Held a Phone Call with Sharaa, Syria Says it “Thwarted Plans” to Destabilize the Country

A Syrian government source has accused the Israeli occupation of arming an outlaw militia to stir up chaos in Suweida during the July 2025 events, with the aim of dragging the country into a wider war. The source said the government succeeded in thwarting the plan, although Israeli attempts to destabilize the governorate continue.

The official news agency SANA quoted the source on Thursday as saying that the Druze of Suweida are an integral part of the Syrian national fabric, and stressed the rejection of dragging them into Israeli propaganda and elections.

The source said that Israeli bombardment, which it claimed hindered the Syrian government’s intervention to end the clashes between Druze and Bedouin in July 2025, had stopped through U.S. mediation.

The source added that Damascus continues to work with the United States and Jordan on implementing the trilateral roadmap to reintegrate Suweida into the Syrian state, in a way that guarantees the rights of residents and strengthens security and stability.

The source called on the international community, the United States and countries of the region to shoulder their responsibilities and pressure Israel to abide by the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement and stop its interference in Syria’s internal affairs.

The Suweida Events and the Trilateral Roadmap

In July 2025, Suweida governorate witnessed bloody clashes that began between local armed groups before widening with the intervention of government forces and the outbreak of fighting between them and local factions, leaving hundreds dead and thousands of civilians displaced.

The clashes coincided with Israeli airstrikes that targeted government forces’ positions in Suweida, as well as military sites in the capital Damascus, including the Ministry of Defense headquarters. Israel justified its intervention as an effort to protect the Druze and prevent Syrian forces from deploying in the south.

On September 16, 2025, Syria, Jordan and the United States announced, during a trilateral meeting in Damascus, the adoption of a roadmap to address the Suweida crisis and restore stability in southern Syria.

The roadmap included measures to stop the violence, ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, restore basic services, facilitate the return of displaced people, and determine the fate of the missing and detained, alongside holding those responsible for violations to account and launching a national reconciliation process.

It also provided for working to end external interference in the governorate and holding consultations to reach security understandings on southern Syria, while affirming Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
