Kampong Thom provincial administration has banned the demolition of heritage buildings and unauthorised alterations that could damage their original appearance, aesthetic appeal and historical value, according to a directive issued by provincial governor Nuon Pharoth.

In the October 8 directive, Pharoth said heritage buildings, which are valuable national cultural assets, face risks of loss, destruction, changes to their original form and other forms of encroachment that could compromise their aesthetic appeal and historical value.

To ensure the sustainable preservation of these buildings in accordance with the Law on the Protection of Cultural Heritage dated January 25, 1996, and a directive issued on October 12, 2021, the provincial administration issued instructions to relevant departments and units, city and district administrations, and owners responsible for managing and using heritage buildings.

The directive strictly prohibits modifications to heritage buildings, alterations to their exterior appearance, and technically improper repairs that could damage their original aesthetic features.

It also prohibits the demolition or destruction of heritage buildings, including religious structures, public and private buildings, settlements and traditional houses.

Any repair, alteration of appearance or demolition of a heritage building requires prior review and approval from the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and relevant authorities.

All relevant departments, units, city and district administrations, and property owners have been instructed to disseminate and implement the directive effectively and responsibly.
