Pchum Ben road accidents claim 26 lives, injure 101 in three days

Road accidents during Cambodia’s three-day Pchum Ben holiday rose sharply compared with last year, with fatalities increasing by 16 and injuries by 71, according to the Ministry of Interior.

A total of 26 people were killed and 101 others injured in 34 road accidents across Cambodia during the three-day Pchum Ben holiday from October 10 to 12, marking a significant increase in casualties compared with the same holiday period last year.

According to figures released by the Ministry of Interior’s Spokesperson Group, the number of accidents increased by 14 cases compared with 2025, while fatalities rose by 16 and injuries by 71.

The figures show that October 10 recorded 14 accidents, leaving 16 people dead and 20 injured. On October 12, another 10 accidents were reported, resulting in eight deaths and 28 injuries.

The ministry also provided cumulative figures covering the Pchum Ben observance period, beginning from Ben 1, reporting a total of 143 road accidents nationwide, which claimed 86 lives and left 258 people injured.

Compared with the corresponding period in 2025, the cumulative figures represent an increase of 26 accidents, six fatalities and 102 injuries.

The figures highlight a concerning rise in road traffic casualties during one of Cambodia’s most important traditional holidays, when large numbers of people travel between Phnom Penh, provincial towns and their hometowns to reunite with their families and participate in religious ceremonies.
