More than 24,000 displaced Cambodians remain unable to return home

More than 24,000 displaced Cambodians remain in temporary shelters and designated safe areas, despite about 625,000 people having returned to their homes following the 2025 Cambodia-Thailand border conflict, according to the Ministry of Interior.

The Thai military launched two major assaults on Cambodia in July and December last year. Since then, at least 24,000 people have been unable to return home because of barbed wire laid by Thai soldiers and the risks posed by unexploded ordnance (UXO).

The ministry said approximately 649,000 Cambodian civilians had been displaced by what it described as Thai military aggression. Of that number, around 625,000 had returned to their homes, while the remaining displaced people continued to stay at temporary sites, in safe camps established by authorities and in villages awaiting their return.

The ministry reported extensive damage to civilian infrastructure and public facilities, including 1,558 houses, 26 schools, 14 hospitals and health centres, 87 sections of road and five bridges. Damage was also reported to clean water systems, electricity transmission infrastructure, administrative buildings and religious sites.

The ministry also reported damage to Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and several other ancient temples in the border area.

Separately, the Cambodian Mine Action Centre raised concerns about unexploded ordnance in affected areas, which could continue to pose risks to civilians even after the peace agreement was signed.
