Twin typhoons to bring rain and thunderstorms to Cambodia during Pchum Ben

Twin regional typhoons are influencing the southwest monsoon system, bringing widespread rain, thunderstorms and strong gusts across Cambodia from today until Sunday.

While Cambodia is not in the direct path of Typhoon Nolo (T2628) and Typhoon Koguma (T2629), the systems are strengthening monsoon conditions across the Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, the South China Sea, and the Mekong Basin.

Regional forecasts by zone indicate the following weather patterns:

1. Lowland areas: Temperatures will range between 25°C and 33°C with southwest and northwest winds averaging 4 metres per second. Provinces including Battambang, Pursat, Siem Reap, Kandal, and Phnom Penh face a 50% chance of rain accompanied by thunder, lightning, and gusts.

2. Highlands: Temperatures will span from 24°C to 31°C with southwesterly and westerly winds averaging 5 metres per second. Mountainous and upland tracts—such as Kampong Speu, Pailin, Preah Vihear, Mondulkiri, and the Cardamom mountain ranges—can expect rain and thunderstorms covering 60% of the area.

3. Coastal regions: Temperatures will range between 25°C and 34°C with southwest and southeast winds averaging 4 metres per second. Koh Kong, Sihanoukville, Kampot, Kep, and Bokor mountains face a 40% chance of rain, thunderstorms, and gusts, with sea wave heights averaging between 0.50 and 1.75 metres.
