Season 2 premiere recap (spoiler alert)
The season 2 premiere of “Marshals,” titled “All Hat No Cattle,” picks up immediately after the explosive season 1 finale, with Kayce Dutton facing his most personal crisis yet. After discovering that Tate has been taken hostage as part of the growing East Camp land conspiracy, Kayce launches a desperate rogue mission to bring his son home. Meanwhile, the rest of the Marshals team uncovers evidence pointing to a much larger criminal operation tied to the fight over East Camp, setting the stage for the season’s biggest conflict.
The premiere also confirms that Cal and Belle survived the attack that ended season 1, while Thomas Rainwater continues battling powerful interests seeking control of land and resources connected to Broken Rock. As Kayce closes in on Tate’s kidnappers, a violent confrontation brings multiple storylines together and reveals new details about the forces working behind the scenes.
Perhaps the biggest revelation comes near the episode’s conclusion, when Tom Weaver’s role in the East Camp conspiracy becomes clearer. The premiere also confirms that Weaver’s ranch hands were responsible for the barn fire that ultimately led to Garrett Garvey’s death — portrayed by Riley Green — in season 1.
The episode ends with Tate’s rescue effort reshaping several key relationships and establishing season 2’s central storyline: Kayce’s fight to protect his family, East Camp, and Broken Rock from a powerful network of adversaries willing to use violence, corruption, and intimidation to get what they want.
‘Marshals’ season 1 recap (major spoilers)
Need a refresher before starting season 2?
Season 1 centered on Kayce’s effort to move beyond the trauma and violence that defined much of his life during “Yellowstone.” What began as a fresh start quickly evolved into a widespread conspiracy involving East Camp, Broken Rock Reservation, mining interests, and powerful figures seeking control of valuable land.
Throughout the season, Kayce’s fellow Marshals faced their own challenges. Pete “Cal” Calvin struggled with a cancer diagnosis, Miles Kittle increasingly pushed ethical boundaries during investigations, and tensions mounted across Montana as criminal organizations, militias, and political interests collided.
Everything came to a head in the season 1 finale, when an assassination attempt against Thomas Rainwater exposed a broader conspiracy. A militia attack escalated the conflict, and the season ended with Tate Dutton being taken hostage by rancher Tom Weaver, who was revealed to have darker motives than anyone suspected. Meanwhile, Cal and Belle found themselves under attack, leaving viewers uncertain about their fate heading into season 2.
