In view of a weather warning issued by the Meteorological Department, the Uttarakhand administration has announced the closure of all government, non-government and private schools for Classes 1 to 12, along with Anganwadi centres, in four districts on Saturday, September 26, 2026.

The one-day closure has been ordered in Nainital, Pithoragarh, Champawat, Bageshwar and Rudraprayag as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and children amid forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

According to the forecast issued by the Meteorological Department in Dehradun on September 25, several parts of these districts are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with the possibility of extremely heavy rain in some areas. Thunderstorms and strong winds have also been forecast in some locations.

Red Alert Issued for Nainital

The Nainital district administration has issued orders for the closure of all government, non-government and private schools for Classes 1 to 12, as well as Anganwadi centres, on September 26.

A Red Alert has been issued for the district, with the weather department warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds at some places. The administration has also highlighted the possibility of landslides in vulnerable areas.

Officials concerned have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the closure order.

Pithoragarh Schools to Remain Closed

Schools for Classes 1 to 12 and Anganwadi centres in Pithoragarh district will also remain closed on September 26.

The decision follows the weather department’s forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rain possible at isolated locations. The district administration said the precautionary closure has been ordered in the interest of student safety.

One-Day Holiday Declared in Champawat

In Champawat, a holiday has been declared for students of Classes 1 to 12 in all government, council-run, aided and recognised private schools on September 26.

All Anganwadi centres in the district will also remain closed. The Chief Education Officer and District Programme Officer have been directed to ensure implementation of the order.

Bageshwar district has also announced a one-day holiday for September 26 in view of the Red Alert issued by the Meteorological Department.

The closure applies to all government, government-aided and private schools for Classes 1 to 12, as well as Anganwadi centres. Officials have been instructed to ensure compliance, with necessary action to be taken in case of violations.

Schools to remain closed in Rudraprayag district on September 26

The Rudraprayag district administration has also ordered the closure of all government, non-government and private schools for Classes 1 to 12, along with all Anganwadi centres, on September 26.

The order, issued by the District Magistrate/Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, Rudraprayag, cites the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall and lightning in the district.

The administration said the decision has been taken as a precautionary measure with student safety in mind.
