MARION, Ind. (WISH) — Grant County Sheriff Del Garcia announced on Facebook Thursday that he will reduce the number of Flock Cameras his department uses in Grant County from six down to two.

Originally, the department used 12 cameras. Over time, Garcia said they cut that down to six.

“Now, I have made the decision to reduce that number again, from six cameras down to two,” Garcia said in a Facebook post. “Flock cameras have become a hot topic, and I understand why. As sheriff, one of my responsibilities is keeping our community safe, but I also believe I have a responsibility to protect the rights and privacy of the people we serve.”

Garcia said those two responsibilities do not have work against each other. He hoped to find a balance between the two because of the effectiveness Flock cameras are as investigative tools.

“Our Flock cameras have been helpful in the investigation of three murders, along with helping us locate stolen vehicles, wanted individuals and vehicles connected to other crimes,” he said on Facebook.

Garcia said he was reducing Flock cameras in the county down to two because he believes in limited government and that citizens deserve transparency.

“I believe citizens have every right to ask questions about technology that can be used to monitor vehicles traveling through their community,” he said.

Going from 12 cameras to six to two, Garcia said, is finding the right balance between giving deputies a useful investigative tool and respecting people’s right to privacy.

Garcia did not give a timeline for when the Marion County Sheriff’s Office will transition to two flock cameras.
