HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — The Huntington Police Department has added a school resource canine to support students in Huntington County schools.

Officer Daniel Lowes and Canine Watson began working together during the 2026-27 school year after completing training and certification through the International Police Work Dog Association.

The School Resource Canine program is a partnership between the Huntington Police Department, Huntington County Community Schools and local organizations and community members.

Watson will accompany Lowes in area schools and interact with students as part of the department’s school resource program. Police said the canine can provide comfort to students experiencing grief, stress, anxiety or other difficult circumstances.

The department also expects Watson to help build relationships between students and law enforcement.

Police said the program was created in response to the need for additional support for students’ emotional well-being while also providing another way for officers to interact with students in a school setting.

The program was made possible through contributions and support from local organizations and community members.

Bowen Health recently documented Lowes and Watson as part of its work highlighting the School Resource Canine program.

The department said Lowes and Watson will serve schools throughout Huntington County during the current school year.
