On Wednesday a Hearing in Panama will Decide if Publio De Gracia Remains in La Nueva Joya Prison.

Publio De Gracia, the former director of the General Directorate of Revenue (DGI) under investigation for alleged unjustified enrichment, participates this Wednesday in a hearing for a change of precautionary measure.  De Gracia is being held in pretrial detention at La Nueva Joya prison. His lawyer, Gladys Quintero, has appealed, and Wednesday’s hearing is specifically for her to argue why her client deserves a less severe pretrial measure.

The hearing was scheduled for August 31, but was postponed because De Gracia – who requested to participate – had difficulty connecting via Zoom from the prison. The former director of the DGI is charged with the alleged crime of unjustified enrichment.   An audit by the Comptroller ‘s Office found that he accumulated $724,682 whose legitimate origin he could not prove.   In addition, he transferred funds to his wife Elaine Salterio and another woman, named Ninoshka Madeleine Ríos Samaniego pictured below, with whom he had a romantic relationship.
