The South Warren football team weathered the storm, overcoming a shaky start to pull away for an emphatic 49-17 win over Bowling Green on Friday at Bowling Green High School.
South Warren (3-1) survived a weather delay and a wild first quarter – getting control by halftime before dominating in the second half.
“The beginning of this game, I feel like it is the same every time,” South Warren coach Brandon Smith said. “There is a lot of emotion, a lot of big plays back and forth. Then you kinda settle down and get into football. I thought once that happened our guys did a really nice job.”
After a lightning delay forced a 35-minute delay, Bowling Green (1-3) came out and delivered a huge body shot on the first play from scrimmage – with Nick Graham taking a handoff and busting away for a 70-yard touchdown run.
The Spartans answered with a six-play drive – using a little trickery on a fourth-down play near midfield. Quarterback Camden Page faked a toss to running back Jamir Boards before giving it to Tucker Sears on the reverse, with Sears taking it to the house for a 47-yard score. The Spartans missed the extra point allowing BG to maintain a 7-6 advantage.
After a big return by Jett Reynolds to the Spartans’ 42, Bowling Green scored again on the first offensive play – a 42-yard strike from Anthony Davis to Arlando Davis that made the score 14-6 less than four minutes in.

South answered again, with Page’s keeper capping a five-play, 80-yard drive to trim the deficit to 14-13.
Another long Reynolds return set the Purples up in Spartan territory again, but South Warren’s defense was able to hold BG to a field goal that made the score 17-13 late in the first.
It was all Spartans from there.
Boards’ touchdown run early in the second gave South Warren the lead for good, with Boards adding an 89-yard touchdown reception out of the backfield to give the Spartans a 27-17 halftime lead.
“They came out in the beginning and punched us in the mouth, but we just knew that we had to keep going and use our versatility on offense,” Boards said.
Boards and Page hooked up on another long touchdown on the first series in the second half, a 67-yard score that gave South Warren some breathing room with a 34-17 advantage.
“That was a big part of the game,” Smith said. “I think that kind of put us in control and forced their hand with what they were going to have to do offensively. It let us do what we wanted to do offensively, so yeah I thought that was a big part of it.”
South Warren added a touchdown pass from Page to Sears late in the third, with Coltyn Lyons capping the scoring with a fourth-quarter touchdown run.
“It was a good start and that was kind of one of our goals coming into tonight, starting fast,” BG coach Mark Spader said. “With the delay and everything, I thought our kids handled that well. It was a good beginning to the game.
“We did some better things defensively. We just can’t consistently get people off the field. Then you begin to fatigue. Then the offense has you on your heels.”
South Warren finished with 574 yards of offense.
Page finished 12-for-16 passing for 333 yards and three scores. Boards totaled 98 yards rushing and 178 yards receiving on five catches.
“I couldn’t do anything without my line,” Boards said. “We just had to come out and execute.”
Bowling Green finished with 225 yards, held to 123 yards after the first two plays. South Warren’s defense forced two turnovers and recorded five sacks.
“I thought once we kinda settled in and cooled our heads a little bit and started reading our keys and playing football that the defense played well,” Smith said.
Both teams return to action on Sept. 18, with South Warren hosting Christian County and Bowling Green opening district play at Barren County.
