Iowa weather: Beautiful day before rain chances this weekend
DES MOINES, Iowa —
It’s been a nice break from the rain, and we’ll keep it dry for a little bit longer.

High pressure continues to slowly move east over the Great Lakes. As it does, we’ll see an area of low pressure begin to move in from the west. As the gradient between the high pressure to the east and low pressure to the west tighten, we’ll see our winds increase with gusts of 25 to 30mph possible Friday helping push our temperatures into the middle 80s.
Showers will move in late Friday evening into Saturday with the potential for isolated storms as well, though any severe threat looks to stay to our northwest. Winds from the north briefly return behind the front pushing our high temperatures back down into the upper 70s to low 80s.
As the cold front moves through the state, it slows down and lingers in southern Iowa which will again bring the potential for scattered showers Saturday mainly south of I-80 and possibly a storm or two in the afternoon if the atmosphere can recover enough.
Showers move back in Sunday ahead of our next system that’ll bring heavy rain and strong storms Monday. Highs top out in the middle 70s Sunday thanks to the showers that will be present mainly in the afternoon.
As our next weathermaker approaches from the west a warm front will push over the state bringing in warmth and more moisture pushing highs back into the middle 80s and dewpoints into the low to mid 70s. This soupy atmosphere will provide plenty of energy for storms to fire along the systems trailing cold front that will move through later Monday evening. With that said, there’s still some uncertainty with respect to the exact track and timing so much more detail at this point is hard to pin down, but it’ll be a day to keep an eye on.
As the front associated with this system exits the state much cooler air will begin to filter into the state dropping our high temperatures into the low to mid 70s for the remainder of the week. More showers and thunderstorms are possible Wednesday as the front from this system stalls out along the Missouri border. How far north this moves into Iowa is still somewhat in question and we’ll have better detail as we get closer.
