The Smyrna Eagles (1-0) defeated Red Lion Christian Academy (0-1), 38-0, on September 4, during the first week of Delaware high school football competition.
BEAR, DE — Smyrna quarterback Drew Marks stood in the shotgun formation with his feet at the Red Lion 40 yard line, sophomore running back Terrell Ingram to his right, three receivers lined up to the left and a lone receiver on the right. Marks caught the snap and surveyed the field, but was unable to find an open receiver from the pocket. The senior signal caller rolled to his left looking for a throwing lane and found a small window to deliver the ball to junior receiver Mikiah Jackson.
Jackson was the lone receiver on the right and streaked toward the left sideline during his route. As Marks rolled to his left, Jackson turned his route upfield and Marks lofted a pass toward Jackson’s back shoulder. Jackson made the initial catch as he spun around contorting his body to make the grab, but as he did, the ball came loose and got tipped in the air. Jackson fell to the ground as the ball descended, but Jackson quickly refocused and lunged from the ground to complete the catch before the ball hit the grass.
Jackson’s highlight catch put the Eagles in the red zone and in position for their fourth score of the first half.
“I just saw it and I knew I could make some way to catch it and I caught it,” Jackson said postgame.
Jackson finished the game with over 100 yards receiving and three receiving touchdowns in Smyrna’s, 38-0, victory over Red Lion, Friday night, ushering in a new season of Delaware high school football.
“It feels amazing to play against another jersey,” Smyrna sophomore Amari Ashley said postgame. “It feels good to go out there and show everybody what we can do.”
The Eagles played well on both sides of the ball, scoring on all four of its first half offensive drives getting production through the air and on the ground.
The Eagles first touchdown came on their opening drive in which they traversed 70 yards downfield in 13 plays. The drive was capped off by a four yard touchdown run from senior Chrystian Carroll. Smyrna’s second touchdown was scored by Jackson on a 50-yard catch and run at the end of the first quarter.
Jackson scored his second touchdown of the first half on Smyrna’s subsequent drive, before making the tip catch on the Eagles’ fourth drive which ended in a one yard touchdown run from Ingram.
“We’re just gonna go at you every play,” Jackson said about what makes Smyrna’s offense dynamic. “I mean, [it’s] a tempo offense, so we don’t let up our foot on the gas and we just go at you every play and drill it down.”
Smyrna’s fourth scoring drive was set up by an interception from sophomore Amari Ashley as Red Lion threatened in Smyrna territory. Ashley’s interception was the first of two interceptions for the Eagles throughout the game and was a part of a strong defensive showing for the program.
“I saw the quarterback drop back and then I saw them do the post-wheel that we study everyday,” Ashley said describing his interception. “So, I just did everything we did in practice and went up and got it. Just trying to be an athlete.”
Smyrna’s defense never allowed Red Lion to generate any offensive momentum and when the Lions made it into Smyrna territory, the Eagles were able to stop them before they reached the endzone.
Red Lion found some offensive success through the air with key throws from freshman quarterback Chase Manlove and strong runs by senior Jordon Jones, but the Lions were unable to string those plays together and breakthrough against Smyrna’s defense.
Red Lion will have a week off before they play again on Saturday, September 19, against Long Island Lutheran High School from New York. That game will be played in Bear at 1:00 p.m. and will be the first out of state test for last season’s Class 2A champion.
Smyrna’s next game will be a road game against Frederick High School on Thursday, September 10, in Frederick, Maryland. This game will be the first of two out of state opponents Smyrna faces before the program takes on its first Class 3A opponent in Middletown on October 2.
