European Triathlon Cup in Northern Ireland excludes Israeli team over Palestinian crisis

Organizers of the European Triathlon Cup in Londonderry have barred a four-member Israeli delegation from competing in this weekend’s event, citing an outright refusal to normalize Israel’s standing on the global sporting stage while the Palestinian people continue to suffer.

The Northern Ireland Triathlon Club, which hosts the multi-sport competition featuring sequential swimming, cycling, and running legs, pulled the plug on the Israeli athletes immediately after reviewing the provisional entry list published by World Triathlon.

In a formal statement, the host club confirmed it lodged a sharp, unequivocal objection to the World Triathlon governing body, asserting that no Israeli representation would be permitted at the venue. Organizers underscored that the ban does not target individuals based on religion or ethnicity, but rather serves as a principled stand against official state representation during an ongoing humanitarian crisis.

The decision follows mounting security concerns and planned demonstrations near the venue. According to Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth, local police in Northern Ireland actively monitored calls on social media rallying protesters against the delegation’s arrival.

The boycott mirrors a broader wave of resistance sweeping international sports fixtures involving Israeli teams. UEFA recently moved upcoming UEFA Nations League matches involving Ireland and Israel to neutral venues, with Ireland’s home leg slated for Serbia behind closed doors and the return fixture scheduled in Hungary.
