After months of speculation, the Tripoli government’s Ministry of Transport has inadvertently confirmed that the opening date for the newly constructed Tripoli International Airport will be in ‘‘the fourth quarter of 2026’’.
The old Tripoli International Airport had been destroyed in militia fighting in the summer of 2014. The airport was initially being constructed by a consortium of Italian companies and was supposed to open in 2024.
The revelation of the airport’s opening date came in the very last sentence of a report posted by the Transport Ministry today.
The report was on an expanded meeting chaired today by Khaled Swesi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport for Air Transport Affairs, held at the Ministry’s Tripoli headquarters.
Reviewing operational readiness for Tripoli International Airport
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Libyan Internal Investment and Development Fund (LIIDF) and airlines operating in Libya to discuss relevant technical and operational requirements and to coordinate their participation in operational readiness activities for Tripoli International Airport.
The session included a review of the airport’s operational readiness, ”with the opening scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026”.
It will be recalled that, despite several enquiries, the Tripoli authorities had refused over the last few months to confirm the opening date for Tripoli International Airport. They had also refused to provide an updated photograph of the construction of the airport.
Unauthorised personnel, including media, have been denied by a strict security cordon access to the airport’s construction site.
