Benghazi – Saeed Asbaqah, chairman of the Agriculture Oversight Committee at the House of Representatives, held a broad meeting at the parliament’s headquarters in Benghazi with several executive bodies and institutions from the agriculture sector. The meeting aimed to review the current state of the sector, address key challenges, and propose recommendations to improve agricultural performance in Libya.
According to the parliament’s media office, participants included Major General Fawzi Merrimi, head of the Agricultural Police Authority; Abdel Salam Jibril Al-Shehibi, chairman of the Steering Committee for Plant Protection and Quarantine; Dr. Abdel Hamid Taher Boslom, director general of the Agricultural Research Center; Major General Fadil Al-Shehibi, head of administrative affairs at the Agricultural Police; and Dr. Mohamed Al-Aqab, chairman of the board at the National Animal Health Center.
An expert committee from the Agriculture Oversight Committee also attended, including Mahmoud Rashwan, Muftah Al-Khashmi, Mustafa Al-Kadiki, Yahya Al-Juweifi, and Abdullah Mustafa, in addition to Yousef Ajram, the representative of the assigned premises, and Ali Boushouq, secretary of the Agriculture Oversight Committee.
Asbaqah stressed that advancing the agricultural sector is a national priority because of its direct link to food security, the national economy, and sustainable development. He called for greater efforts and unity among the relevant institutions, urging all parties to work with national responsibility to solve the sector’s challenges.
Asbaqah affirmed the House Agriculture Committee’s ongoing support for all initiatives and measures that would develop the sector. He said the committee will assist specialized institutions and back plans to increase the efficiency of agricultural and livestock production, protect agricultural wealth, and improve services for farmers and producers.
The meeting also covered a range of issues affecting the agriculture sector. Attendees emphasized the importance of cooperation between executive bodies and experts to make use of scientific and technical capacities in finding practical solutions and achieving concrete results.
Asbaqah concluded by stating that the next stage requires sustained and serious work, rather than temporary fixes, with the public interest and the welfare of Libyan farmers as top priorities. He said the committee will continue its meetings, keep following up on the sector, and support all national efforts to build a strong agricultural sector capable of achieving food security and boosting the national economy.
