On August 31, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution submitted by Tajikistan establishing the International Day of Safe, Secure and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence. The new international day will be observed annually on August 31, starting in 2027.
According to the official UN website, the draft resolution “International Day of Safe, Secure and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence” was presented by the delegation of Tajikistan.
144 states voted in favor of the document, while Israel and the United States opposed it, and three other countries — Argentina, Canada, and Samoa — abstained.
Thus, August 31 will become a separate international date dedicated to issues of safe, secure, and trustworthy development and use of artificial intelligence technologies.
Why August 31 Was Chosen
The choice of date is connected to the history of artificial intelligence’s emergence as a scientific field.
On August 31, 1955, the idea of conducting a research project at Dartmouth College was presented, which subsequently took place in the summer of 1956. The Dartmouth Project is considered one of the key events in the formation of artificial intelligence as an independent field of scientific research.
The establishment of the International Day is intended to promote increased attention to AI development issues, the exchange of knowledge and experience between countries, and the promotion of safe and responsible application of new technologies.
Tajikistan’s Initiative
For Tajikistan, the adoption of the resolution became one of the notable results of its participation in the international discussion on the future of artificial intelligence. In Dushanbe, the initiative is viewed as the country’s contribution to shaping the international agenda in the field of AI. It also aligns with Tajikistan’s policy on the development of digital technologies and the implementation of modern technological solutions.
The adopted resolution emphasizes the need for international cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence and the creation of conditions for its safe, secure, and trustworthy use.
Recall that on July 25, 2025, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution initiated by Tajikistan titled “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Creating New Opportunities for Sustainable Development in Central Asia.”
Decision Against the Backdrop of Global AI Discussion
The establishment of the new international day occurred against the backdrop of the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence technologies, which are used in various fields — from education and healthcare to economics, public administration, and scientific research.
At the same time, states are discussing risks associated with AI, including issues of security, data protection, the responsibility of developers and users, as well as the need for international rules regulating new technologies.
The UN considers international cooperation an important condition for ensuring that the development of artificial intelligence contributes to achieving sustainable development goals and benefits people.
