Trinidad and Tobago’s all-time leading goalscorer Stern John has been appointed head coach of Grenada’s senior men’s football team, returning to international management with the Spice Isle outfit. The Grenada Football Association welcomed the former T&T striker, who was a member of the country’s historic 2006 FIFA World Cup squad. John, who has spent the past six years coaching at international level, succeeds Anthony Modeste in the Grenada post.

The appointment also has a personal connection for John, with the Grenada Football Association noting that although he starred internationally for Trinidad and Tobago, he has roots in Grenada through his Grenada-born mother. His first competitive assignment will come on September 25, when Grenada face Cuba in the CONCACAF Nations League. John will be looking to make an immediate impact as Grenada seek to strengthen their position in the regional competition.

John most recently coached St Lucia, where he spent four years in charge before leaving the position in July. During his tenure, he recorded 12 victories, ten defeats and three draws. His international coaching experience also includes a spell with Anguilla from 2020 to 2022, following his tenure as head coach of Central FC from 2017 to 2020.

As a player, John enjoyed a lengthy professional career in England and Major League Soccer, first representing American clubs, including Columbus Crew, before heading to England where he played with Nottingham Forest, Birmingham City, Coventry City, Sunderland, Southampton and Crystal Palace. He scored 70 international goals for T&T, making him CONCACAF’s all-time leading international goalscorer.

His appointment in Grenada adds another chapter to a career that has seen him move from prolific striker to an increasingly experienced regional coach.
