Power generation from turbine 6 of block 3 at the Paks nuclear power plant got underway late on Saturday evening.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar appeared in a live video from the power plant’s control centre, where duty officer Tamás Kis reported that turbine 6 had been successfully connected to the national electricity grid.

At the time of the broadcast, the turbine was operating at 22 megawatts of output, which is being increased by one megawatt per minute until it reaches 240 megawatts. The startup of the remaining blocks is under way, it was announced in the video, which was broadcast live on Prime Minister Magyar’s Facebook page.

Péter Magyar stated that the output of the nuclear power plant — which has a nominal capacity of 2,000 megawatts — could rise from around 500 megawatts late Saturday evening to approximately 750 megawatts by Sunday morning. All eight turbines are expected to be back in operation by Wednesday.

The Prime Minister drew attention to the fact that an output of 2,000 megawatts covers more than 35 percent of Hungary’s electricity consumption.
