For the 6th straight year, the Grenada Chess Federation (GCF), from 17–21 August, will be holding its annual one-week Chess Summer Camp targeting students from age 7 and upwards and adults of all ages who wish to learn to play chess.  

The programme provides an opportunity for students and others to learn to play chess. More advanced players will also get the opportunity to play against each other as a means of warming up for upcoming chess tournaments, including the National Championships (October/November) and the first ever Inter-schools Chess Tournament in November.

This year’s summer camp extends to both Carriacou and Grenville, where one-day camps will be held at Bishops College on 20 August and at the St Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) on 21 August. The established camp at the Grenada Boys Secondary School (GBSS), the venue for the past 5 years, will run for the full week, 17–21 August.

At all venues, the sessions will run from 10 am to 2 pm.

The one-day camp at Bishop’s College is being organised in conjunction with the recently launched Carriacou Chess Club. At the end of the one-day camp at SAASS, the GCF aims to launch a St Andrew Chess Club.

Chess, among other attributes, enhances critical thinking, slows down memory loss, improves concentration, and increases attention span. It is considered to be a very effective, if not the best, mental gym.

As part of its efforts to spread Chess nationwide, the GCF also runs a Chess on Saturdays programme at the T A Marryshow Community College (TAMCC), Tanteen, from 1 pm to 5 pm. The programme runs every Saturday, except public holidays, and is open to all ages.
