The publisher of Mandiner announced that it is suspending publication of the weekly print edition. The July 30 issue was the last to be published. Mandiner’s publisher, Mandiner Novum Nonprofit Zrt., announced that it is suspending publication of the print weekly. The paper will not be published this week; the July 30 issue, which featured Mária Schmidt on the cover, was the last.

We regret to announce that Mandiner Novum Nonprofit Zrt. is suspending publication of the Mandiner print weekly. This means that the paper will not be published this week; the July 30 issue, which is still available, will be the last,”

reads the statement released by Mandiner’s editorial staff.

The print version of Mandiner was launched in September 2019. In its latest statement, the editorial board wrote that, in the shrinking market for print public affairs newspapers, they sought to produce a weekly newspaper of more than sixty pages that covered not only Hungarian public life but also issues related to Hungarians living abroad, culture, the economy, sports, and international events.

The farewell announcement specifically highlights the major interviews, reports, travelogues, opinion pieces, and content focusing on Hungarians living abroad that appeared in the paper. According to the editorial staff,

the weekly served as a chronicle of domestic and international events in recent years.

Mandiner Novum Nonprofit Zrt. also announced that subscribers who had prepaid their subscription fees for the period following the suspension of publication will receive a pro-rata refund for the portion of the period not yet utilized.

A new era has also dawned in the history of the newspaper Magyar Nemzet. The issue on July 31 was the last to be printed as a daily, now the publication appears as a weekly. In an article, László Néző, editor-in-chief of Magyar Nemzet, bid farewell to the old format and welcomed the new one. The editor-in-chief noted that this marks the end of Hungary’s last national daily newspaper covering public life. He wrote that the transition to a weekly also signifies a renewal, certainly in terms of content.
