The South Sudan Media Authority has given radio stations, newspapers, online media outlets, television channels and social media platforms operating in the country one month to renew their expired operational licenses.

In a notice dated August 14, the Media Authority said the directive applies to media entities already registered with the authority but that have failed to renew their licences within the prescribed period.

The authority said it had observed that a substantial number of radio stations had failed to renew their operational licences, with some reportedly operating for six years or more without valid licenses.

“Some stations have reportedly operated for six years or more without valid operational licenses,” the notice states.

The Media Authority has urged affected media houses to immediately begin and complete the renewal process in accordance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements.

The authority said compliance is particularly important ahead of the approaching electoral period, calling on all media entities to regularize their licensing status without further delay.

“It is a legal requirement that all broadcasting and other regulated media entities operating within the Republic of South Sudan should possess a valid operational license,” the notice states.

The authority said lists of media entities with expired licenses have been attached for reference and necessary action.

All affected media entities have been given one month from the date of the notice to comply and regularize their operations.
