The Tuesday election of the president of the republic is the lowest point of Hungarian democracy since the transition — the Fidesz parliamentary group stated in a communiqué to MTI, noting that Fidesz and KDNP members of parliament will not take part in the election or inauguration.

They wrote that Tisza had “arbitrarily and illegitimately terminated” Tamás Sulyok’s mandate, and that the election of the new head of state is therefore also illegitimate. “The Fidesz and KDNP parliamentary groups will not assist in Tuesday’s procedure — we will not take part in the election or inauguration,” they stressed.

They said the procedure is “another stage in Tisza’s growing authoritarianism” and the lowest point of Hungarian democracy since the transition.

They also assessed that András Baka is personally unfit to embody the unity of the nation, and that his election is not only illegitimate but also a grave affront to the legacy of 1956 and the victims of the 2006 police brutality.
