Three Cachar men held over assault of two minor girls from Mizoram

Three men from Assam’s Cachar district have been arrested for allegedly abducting two minor girls from Mizoram and sexually assaulting them inside a moving vehicle, police said.

The accused were identified as Amjad Hussain Laskar, 20, of Rajnagar; Saddam Hussain Laskar, 23, of Bhaga Bazar; and Rinku Das, 25, of Khaspur. They were arrested after the two girls, aged 15 and 16, reached Dholai police station in the early hours of August 3 and reported the alleged incident.

Cachar Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Pal said the girls arrived at the police station at around 2.30am and reported that the accused had allegedly abducted them and sexually assaulted them despite their resistance.

“As both of them stated that they were minors, the case was handled in accordance with procedures applicable to children,” Pal said.

Police registered a case under Sections 70(2) and 87 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to gang rape of a minor and abduction, respectively, along with Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, concerning aggravated penetrative sexual assault.

“The investigation is underway. Statements of the minor survivors have been recorded and the accused have been produced before the court after completion of the initial procedures,” Pal said. He added that both girls had undergone medical examinations.

Police said the girls were being provided care and protection in accordance with procedures applicable to minors and that their families had been informed.

Investigators are also examining how the girls came into contact with the accused, where they were allegedly picked up from and other circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to Assam Police, the girls are residents of Kolasib district in Mizoram. Attempts to obtain a response from senior Mizoram Police officials were unsuccessful.
