World Rugby has denied reports that it gave Samoa an ultimatum to sort out problems over which body governs the sport in the country, or face a ban from international competition.
Recent reports by the Samoa Observer newspaper stated that World Rugby has given the Samoan Government 24 hours until Friday to accept a review of its decision to withdraw its support from Lakapi Samoa, or Samoa could face a 4 year ban.
However, a Spokesperson for World Rugby had denied this report.
“We are in active and constructive dialogue with all parties and remain focused on a positive resolution,” said the World Rugby Spokesperson.
Samoa Global News reached out to Namulauulu Papalii Sami Leota for a comment. Namulauulu is a current opposition Member of Parliament and elected President of Lakapi Samoa.
In a decision that goes against the Constitution, Namulauulu is also now the Lakapi Samoa interim Chairman since former Prime Minister Tullaepa Sailele Malielegaoi stepped down in March 2026.
Namulauulu responded via email, “We are holding discussions with World Rugby and the Government at the moment for a way forward and I’m sorry I am unable to comment.”
In a press conference with Opposition Leader Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi who had held the Chairman position of Lakapi Samoa for over 26 years, he said rugby needs Government support.
“Rugby cannot progress without the government’s assistance and support.”

This week the Government of Samoa said it no longer recognises Lakapi Samoa as the governing sports federation over the development of rugby in the country. The position includes withholding all Government funding support to rugby.
Prime Minister Hon Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt said the government decision is “to assist reset Samoan rugby” adding that “government has supported the major development pathways and financial assistance already in the pipeline to assist the future development of rugby in the country.”
Government says its decision comes “Following months of consultations, and space given to find an amicable resolution to the issues within Samoan rugby.”

The Prime Minister said ample time had been given to the Union to resolve the internal issues and the division impacting the administration of the union.

The Prime Minister said the Government remains committed to the development of rugby in the future and will see what Union it will give its support to, in order to deliver the future development of the sport, to restore the professional standards and Samoa’s rightful place in the global rugby arena.
