The Samoan rugby community is mourning the tragic and sudden passing of Saveatama Faamavaega “Rachel” Saveatama, who died during a rugby league match at the Vaiala Rugby Fields on Saturday.
Saveatama was representing the Marist St Joseph’s Sports Club in a rugby league match against Apia when the incident occurred.
Details surrounding the circumstances remain unclear, and it is not yet known exactly when, how and why he collapsed during the game.
There is video footage of the incident being widely shared on social media, however, Saveatama is already lying on the ground. It shows a few players attending to him, and then an ambulance arrives.
Known simply as “Rachel” to many in the rugby community, Saveatama was a respected and well-loved figure whose involvement in the sport extended far beyond one team or one code.
Early in his rugby career he played for the BSP Southern Tornadoes, a joint Siumu-Falealili franchise for the Super 9 Rugby Competition.

Saveatama was a Senior Player and Referee for Laumosooi Siumu Rugby, earning the respect of his coaches, team mates, opponents and supporters alike.
He also gave back to the game as a rugby referee, reflecting his commitment to the development and growth of the sport in Samoa.

News of his passing has sent shockwaves throughout the local sporting community, with many remembering Rachel as a passionate rugby man, who dedicated countless years to the game as both a player and an official.
His death is a profound loss for Samoan rugby, and tributes are pouring in from clubs, players and supporters across the country as they remember a man who made a lasting impact on the sport he loved.
