The Tonga Tala have concluded their first-ever Commonwealth Games netball campaign on a high, defeating Wales 63-53 to secure ninth place at the Glasgow 2026 Games and finish their landmark debut with a winning performance.

The result marked a positive end to a tournament that saw the Tonga Tala compete against some of the world’s strongest netball nations.

While they were unable to progress beyond the pool stage, the victory over Wales ensured Tonga finished ahead of three other teams in their inaugural Commonwealth Games appearance.

Tonga qualified for Glasgow as one of the world’s top 12 ranked teams, making history by appearing in the Commonwealth Games netball competition for the first time. Drawn in a challenging Pool A alongside Australia, England, South Africa, Malawi and Northern Ireland, the Tala faced a demanding schedule against higher-ranked opponents.

Despite heavy defeats to Australia and South Africa earlier in the tournament, Tonga’s players were widely praised for their determination and commitment.

Coach Jaqua Pori Makea Simpson previously said the experience extended beyond results, highlighting the significance of representing Tonga on one of the Commonwealth’s biggest sporting stages.

Captain Hulita Veve also attracted attention during the Games after leading Tonga in its historic debut, with organisers highlighting her journey back to elite netball after motherhood and personal loss.

For Tonga, the ninth-place finish provides an encouraging platform as the Tala continue preparations for future international competitions, including qualification pathways towards the 2027 Netball World Cup.

The campaign also reinforced Tonga’s growing status among the Pacific’s leading netball nations.
