Hamas agrees to disarm under Trump plan to end Gaza war

Hamas has agreed to a US-backed plan to end the Gaza war that includes the group’s disarmament, the transfer of its weapons to a Palestinian governing body and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, according to Hamas officials.

The announcement came after US President Donald Trump said that an agreement had been reached for the “complete disarmament” of Hamas, describing the move as a key step toward establishing a new administration in Gaza.

Hamas negotiator Ghazi Hamad said the group was making concessions “for the sake of the people in the Gaza Strip” in an effort to end the suffering, killing and displacement caused by the conflict.

Under the proposed arrangement, Hamas said its weapons would be handed over to a Palestinian governing committee established under the framework of the Board of Peace, which would oversee the process of securing and storing the group’s arms.

Hamad said Israel would not be involved in the disarmament process, adding that the National Committee for Administration of Gaza (NCAG) would be responsible for carrying out the task.

The Hamas agreement also includes the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. Hamas said it expected international mediators and the Board of Peace to ensure that all sides comply with the terms of the deal.

Israel has not officially responded to the announcement. However, an Israeli political source told AFP that the proposed agreement did not fully meet Israel’s demand for the complete demilitarization of Gaza.

The issue of Hamas’ weapons has been one of the main obstacles in previous ceasefire negotiations. The latest proposal now shifts attention toward implementation, monitoring and verification of the agreement.

The Board of Peace confirmed that Hamas had agreed to a detailed roadmap for implementing the next stages of the Gaza ceasefire, saying the focus would now move to carrying out the plan.

Trump said that once Hamas is disarmed, Israeli forces would withdraw and an International Stabilization Force, working alongside a new Palestinian police force, would take responsibility for security in Gaza.

Nickolay Mladenov, the Board of Peace’s high representative for Gaza, said the agreement followed months of difficult negotiations, but stressed that the success of the plan would depend on effective implementation and verification.

Egypt is expected to host a meeting of ceasefire mediators, including the United States, Qatar and Turkiye, to discuss the next phase of the agreement.

Despite the existing ceasefire, violence has continued in Gaza. Palestinian health officials reported that Israeli strikes on Thursday killed at least four people, including two children.
