Spain says Schengen security fully protected despite Ceuta migrant crisis

Spain has reaffirmed that the security of the Schengen free movement area remains fully protected following the recent influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, with authorities confirming that the majority of those who entered irregularly have already returned to Morocco.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said on Friday that there was no risk to the integrity of the Schengen Area, emphasizing that border control measures remain firmly in place.

“The security of the Schengen Area is fully guaranteed,” Albares said, noting that travel from the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla to mainland Spain is subject to strict identity checks at police control points.

His remarks came after Spanish authorities reported that most migrants who crossed into Ceuta during the recent surge had been returned to Morocco through coordinated efforts between the two countries.

Spain has also reinforced security in Ceuta following the mass crossings, while continuing to work closely with Moroccan authorities to manage migration flows and prevent further irregular entries.

The Schengen Area allows passport-free travel across much of Europe, but Spain maintains border and identity checks for travel from its North African enclaves to the Spanish mainland to safeguard the bloc’s external frontier.
