Sanele Mao Bows Out of Commonwealth Games

Former Commonwealth Games champion Sanele Mao has concluded his campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after competing in the men’s +110kg weightlifting event.

Mao was unable to register a successful lift, resulting in a Did Not Finish (DNF) outcome.

Although the competition did not go his way, Mao remains one of Samoa’s greatest weightlifters. He made history at the 2018 Commonwealth Games by winning a gold medal in the men’s 105kg category, inspiring a new generation of athletes across Samoa and the Pacific.

His achievements have played a significant role in elevating Samoan weightlifting on the international stage. While Glasgow did not produce the result he had hoped for, Mao’s legacy and contribution to the sport remain firmly intact, and his place in Samoan sporting history is assured.
