Shot put athlete reaches Commonwealth Games final after dramatic qualifying effort

Tongan shot put athlete Penisimani Ta’e’iloa has secured a place in the Commonwealth Games men’s shot put final after a tense qualifying performance that came down to his final attempt.

Competing in the qualifying round against a strong international field, Penisimani faced early pressure after recording two invalid throws. Needing a successful final attempt to remain in contention, he delivered a throw of 14.94 metres to finish 12th and advance to his first Commonwealth Games final.

The qualifying group featured several leading athletes, including Oceania Athletics Championships silver medallist Nick Palmer of New Zealand and two-time Asian Games champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor of India. Athletes required a throw of 20 metres for automatic qualification, with the remaining places determined by the next-best performances.

Penisimani’s final throw ensured he claimed one of those remaining qualifying positions, keeping Tonga represented in the men’s shot put competition at the Games.

His progression to the final marks a significant milestone in his international athletics career and provides another opportunity to compete against some of the Commonwealth’s leading field athletes.

The men’s shot put final is scheduled to take place at 7pm BST today.

The result highlights the determination shown by Penisimani under pressure after two unsuccessful attempts. His ability to deliver when it mattered most secured his place among the finalists and gives Tonga another athlete to follow as competition continues at the Commonwealth Games.
