Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has triggered a major controversy with her harsh remarks against Gen Z protesters who recently took part in demonstrations at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and other cities.
The protests had already attracted attention for their placards, slogans, memes and social media posts, which ranged from creative and humorous to openly abusive.
Reacting to the content shared by some protesters, Kangana described their language and Instagram reels as “puke-inducing” and accused them of being crude and unpleasant.
She said she had never seen so much “ugliness” in one place and questioned the way the young protesters had been raised.
Referring to some protesters calling themselves “cockroaches”, Kangana said they were behaving in a manner that matched the label.
She also claimed that their videos had left her disturbed and that she needed a digital detox.
Her comments became even more controversial when she targeted women who participated in the protests.
Kangana alleged that some “westernised Indian women” were irresponsible, dependent on their parents and unable to become homemakers.
She then described the protesters as “Generation Gutter”, claiming that some of them were not good at studies and had little to contribute to society.
The remarks drew strong political criticism.
Congress leader Bhai Jagtap questioned whether Kangana had any concern for the students who were allegedly mistreated during the protests.
He said it was surprising that, as a woman, she had shown no sympathy towards the young protesters.
AIMIM leader Waris Pathan also condemned her language and demanded that she apologise to Gen Z.
He further urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take note of the remarks made by a BJP MP.
This is not the first time Kangana has criticised the protests. She had earlier questioned the methods adopted by the demonstrators and objected to attempts to pressure the government through street protests.
Her latest comments have now intensified the debate, with critics accusing her of crossing the line between political disagreement and personal abuse.
