Digicel Tonga has launched the inaugural Digicel Cup in partnership with Tonga Rugby League, creating a new domestic platform for players as the country prepares for the Rugby League World Cup 2026.
The competition officially began on Saturday at Atele Field, featuring clubs from across Tonga competing in men’s, women’s and youth divisions. The tournament also marks 40 years of organised rugby league in Tonga, celebrating the sport’s growth from its establishment in 1986 to its current international presence.
Digicel Tonga Chief Executive Officer Christopher Manaog said the partnership was focused on supporting grassroots development and creating opportunities for future generations of players.
“Supporting grassroots rugby league is more than sponsoring a competition—it’s an investment in our young talent, our communities, and the future of the game in Tonga,” Digicel Tonga said in a statement.
The opening round featured teams from communities including Haʻakame, Lapaha, Vaini, Muʻa, Houma, Havelu and Kolofou, with matches across under-14, under-16, under-18 and open divisions, including women’s and girls’ competitions.
The launch comes as rugby league continues to receive increased attention across the Pacific as well as Tonga’s rugby league programme prepares for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.
Earlier this month, Tonga joined Australia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Fiji in a landmark Pacific Rugby League Partnership designed to strengthen grassroots participation, player pathways and elite competition across the region.
Strong domestic competitions are expected to play an important role in identifying and developing players for future international campaigns.
Tonga has become one of the Pacific’s strongest rugby league nations, with the Mate Ma’a Tonga earning a passionate global following and producing internationally recognised players in recent years.
Organisers hope the Digicel Cup will strengthen local clubs, increase participation and provide a pathway for emerging talent as Tonga continues to grow its role in the global rugby league community.
