Tonga Police say the final escapee who fled police custody earlier this week has been apprehended, bringing to an end a nationwide search that prompted public warnings, a cash reward, and regional law enforcement cooperation.

In a statement issued yesterday, Police confirmed the last remaining escapee, Liuaki Fungalei Kokohu Vi, was arrested at a residence in Hala’ovave. Officers said the arrest concluded the TRACE operation launched after three detainees escaped from the Central Police Station in Nuku’alofa last Sunday.

The escape triggered a major police response after authorities warned that two of the escapees were considered dangerous.

One teenage detainee was recaptured within days of the escape, while the remaining two men remained at large as police expanded the search and worked with regional law enforcement agencies. A $5,000 pa’anga reward was later offered for information leading to their capture.

Police had appealed to the public not to approach the escapees but to contact authorities immediately with any information on their whereabouts. The incident attracted widespread public attention because two of the escapees were foreign nationals facing criminal matters in Tonga.

Police thanked members of the public for their support and cooperation, saying community information had contributed to the successful apprehension. They also acknowledged the commitment of officers involved in the multi-day operation and thanked the public for helping keep Tonga safe.

Police have not yet released further details about the circumstances surrounding the final arrest or any additional charges that may result. Investigations into the escape and the events leading up to it are expected to continue.
