INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Every Saturday morning, Daybreak shines a light on local businesses through our partnership with Indiana Grown. This week, the focus is on SixtyOne20 Candles, owned and operated by Mike and Shannon Jones, who have been bringing their fragrant creations to the community since 2019.

The Joneses’ journey began when Shannon’s grandmother taught her the art of candle making as a teenager. A lifelong candle enthusiast, Shannon says she was inspired to start a business after noticing that some candles didn’t provide a strong scent.

“We just started, and it took off from there,” Jones said.

SixtyOne20 Candles uses 100% soy wax sourced from American farmers and a variety of fragrance oils. The candle-making process, Shannon explained, involves melting the wax, adding fragrance, and a precise combination of math, science and curing time. “There’s a lot of testing,” Jones said. “My favorite part is my house smelling good.”

Customers are encouraged to purchase SixtyOne20 Candles online at 6120candles.com or follow the business on Facebook and Instagram. Locally, their products are available in-store at a handmade vendor shop in Ellisville, as well as at Stanger Family Farm in Bloomington.

The Joneses frequently attend local shows, which are crucial to their business. “We enjoy meeting everybody, and we get a lot of repeat customers,” said Shannon.

This year, ‘SixtyOne20 Candles’ will make its debut at the Indy Grand and Grown Marketplace at the Indiana State Fair.

For the Jones family, being on the road at fairs and shows is more than a business; it’s a way to connect with the community and build lasting relationships. “Our favorite shows are, of course, here in Indiana, but we also go to one over in Illinois that we thoroughly enjoy,” Shannon said.

Whether at a state fair or in their own home, SixtyOne20 Candles continues to fill Indiana with locally made scents, one candle at a time.
