More than 250,000 people have been evacuated as massive wildfires rage across Spain and France, forcing authorities into a race to protect lives and communities.

Near Madrid, several blazes have merged into a single fire that officials say is out of control and beyond current firefighting capacity.

In France’s Gironde region, record areas have burned as flames advance toward Bordeaux, prompting further evacuations. Despite widespread destruction to homes, farmland and nature, no human deaths have been reported.

President Emmanuel Macron described the situation as “extremely critical,” while European partners dispatched additional firefighting aircraft under the European Civil Protection Mechanism to help contain the blazes.

Spain is facing a similarly severe crisis, with more than 60,000 people displaced by multiple wildfires. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said protecting lives remains the government’s top priority, warning that strong winds and soaring temperatures are complicating firefighting operations.

The European Union has stepped up its response by sending four firefighting aircraft to Spain and three to France, while Greece has also deployed two additional aircraft to support Spanish authorities.

In the Madrid region, two of three major fires merged into a single blaze that has scorched more than 6,000 hectares and remains out of control.

Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the Ávila wildfire, which has burned around 9,000 hectares. Meanwhile, firefighters have gained ground on the larger Guadalajara blaze after it consumed approximately 32,000 hectares.

Officials warned that the combination of extreme heat, shifting winds and multiple fire fronts continues to hamper containment efforts. Since the start of 2026, wildfires have destroyed nearly 130,000 hectares across Spain, following the record-breaking 393,000 hectares burned during the 2025 fire season.
