1Thessalonians 2:9 “Surely you remember, brothers and sisters, our toil and hardship. We worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you.”

Paul reminds the Thessalonian believers of the way he conducted himself while ministering among them. He worked hard, often supporting himself, so that no one could accuse him of preaching the gospel for personal gain. Although Paul taught elsewhere that those who preach the gospel have the right to receive financial support (1Corinthians 9:14), he willingly laid aside that right on this occasion to remove every obstacle to the gospel.

This stands in sharp contrast to those who use ministry to enrich themselves. Throughout Scripture, God warns against shepherds who feed themselves instead of caring for the flock. A faithful shepherd sacrifices for the sheep. A false shepherd sacrifices the sheep for himself.

Believers should be discerning. Be cautious of ministers who constantly pressure people for money while living in obvious luxury. Be wary of those who measure God’s blessing by expensive lifestyles, private jets, luxury cars, business class travel, or five star hotels, while many of the people supporting their ministry struggle to pay their rent, provide food for their families, or meet basic needs. Be careful of ministries that continually promise financial miracles in exchange for giving. These practices don’t reflect the example of Christ or His apostles.

Jesus said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). Paul followed that example. His concern was not what he could receive from God’s people, but what he could give to them. His greatest desire was that they would know Christ and grow in their faith.

Whether we are pastors, ministry leaders, or church members, our attitude should be the same. We are called to serve, not to exploit. We are called to give, not to take. We are called to reflect the humility and generosity of our Saviour.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Jesus Christ and the faithful ministry of the Apostle Paul. Give me wisdom and discernment to recognise those who faithfully teach Your Word and those who seek personal gain. Help me to serve others with humility, generosity, and a sincere love for Christ. May my life always reflect the heart of the Good Shepherd. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
