A deadly family clash in Aleppo, the arrest of a young man and his father after he lodged a complaint against security personnel in Daraa, and an assault on a doctor inside Raqqa’s national hospital have intensified concern over the spread of weapons, weak institutional accountability and the protection of civilians across Syria.

The three incidents, all reported on Monday, highlight the varied forms of insecurity affecting communities under the country’s transitional authorities—from armed family and tribal disputes to allegations of retaliation by security personnel and the failure to safeguard medical workers.

Deadly Family Feud in Aleppo

One person was killed and six civilians, including a woman and a child, were wounded when an armed clash erupted between two families in Aleppo’s Bani Zaid district on Sunday evening.

Initial accounts suggest the violence stemmed from the renewal of an old feud.

Local sources said four members of one family were wounded, while a member of the other family was killed. A woman and child from the same household were also injured.

Internal security forces deployed reinforcements, dispersed the gunmen and established a security cordon as the casualties were taken to hospital.

Series of Armed Clashes

The confrontation followed two other armed incidents in Aleppo province in recent days.

On 17 July, members of two families exchanged fire with automatic weapons in the Karm al-Maysar district, wounding three people. Two lorries and several warehouses were set ablaze before security forces intervened and arrested several individuals.

A day later, an operation to arrest wanted members of the Danoun family in Azaz escalated into an armed clash after one suspect refused to surrender and shots were fired at security personnel.

Local sources said the raid followed an earlier dispute involving security officers and men who had previously served in factions of the Syrian National Army.

Eighty Clashes Since January

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it had documented 80 family and tribal clashes in areas controlled by Syria’s transitional government since the beginning of 2026.

The incidents killed 64 people and wounded 142 others, including women and children.

Deir ez-Zor recorded the highest number of clashes, with 25 incidents, followed by Aleppo with 16. The Observatory said 17 people had been killed and 23 wounded in Aleppo province alone.

The recurring violence has renewed calls for tighter controls on firearms.

Fadel Abdul Ghany, director of the Syrian Network for Human Rights, has previously estimated that around eight million weapons are circulating in Syria. Some reports suggest that between 80 and 85 per cent of Syrian households possess at least one firearm.

Father and Son Arrested in Daraa

In Daraa province, security personnel in Bosra al-Sham arrested Alaa Ahmad al-Nayef al-Mekdad and his father, Ahmad Mansour al-Mekdad, roughly two weeks after the younger man filed a complaint accusing two security officers of beating and torturing him.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, al-Mekdad was attacked on 8 July while transporting grain to a seed-production centre in Bosra al-Sham.

A group of men allegedly stopped him and beat him with sticks and bladed weapons, leaving injuries and bruises across his body.

The Observatory identified two members of the General Security service among those accused of participating in the assault. It also said it had obtained video footage showing marks on the victim’s face and hands.

The person recording the video alleged that the attackers invoked the authority of the state while threatening him.

Allegations of Retaliation

Al-Mekdad subsequently filed a formal complaint demanding legal action.

His family said no meaningful investigation followed.

Local sources later reported that he and his father had been detained without any official explanation or disclosure of charges.

Relatives accused the security authorities of using detention to pressure the family into withdrawing the case. No official statement had been issued by the time the reports were published.

The incident has raised fresh concern that complainants and witnesses may face retaliation when seeking legal redress against members of the security services.

Rights activists argue that the credibility of any accountability process depends on protecting those who report abuses and ensuring that alleged perpetrators are investigated regardless of rank or institutional affiliation.

Medical Workers Protest in Raqqa

In Raqqa, dozens of medical workers staged a protest outside the national hospital after resident doctor Safaa Hamdan was allegedly subjected to verbal and physical assault inside the facility.

Participants denounced repeated attacks on healthcare staff and demanded an immediate and transparent investigation.

They said such incidents threatened the safety of the entire medical workforce and undermined the ability of doctors and nurses to carry out their duties.

Dispute over Filming

According to local accounts, Hamdan was attacked on Saturday evening by Abdel Azim al-Sheikh, a media employee at the Raqqa Health Directorate, after she attempted to prevent him from filming her inside the hospital.

The dispute reportedly escalated after she objected that the recording violated her privacy while she was at work.

Hospital security detained the alleged assailant, but the director of health later intervened and secured his release, prompting widespread criticism among medical staff.

Local accounts also alleged that Hamdan came under pressure through family mediation and threats of dismissal, eventually leading her to relinquish her personal legal claim.

Officials have neither confirmed nor denied those allegations.

Legal and Professional Backing

Several professional bodies and rights groups backed the medical workers’ demands.

The Raqqa Bar Association said it would take up the case and pursue it through the relevant authorities.

The health and media directorates issued a joint statement announcing the formation of a committee to examine the incident and investigate its administrative circumstances.

The statement did not address allegations that pressure had been placed on the doctor.

A Broader Crisis of Accountability

Taken together, the incidents underscore the scale of the challenge confronting Syria’s transitional institutions.

Armed disputes continue to claim civilian lives, while allegations of interference, retaliation and institutional protection threaten confidence in the authorities’ ability to impose the rule of law.

Rights groups and professional associations have called for independent investigations, stronger protection for complainants and witnesses, and firm action to curb the circulation of weapons.

Without such measures, they warn, local disputes and abuses of authority risk becoming further entrenched.
