Police probe viral video of masked men with machetes

The Zambia Police Service says it has launched investigations into a viral social media video showing four masked individuals allegedly displaying machetes and making statements believed to promote violence.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Police spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, said the service had taken the video seriously and had commenced investigations aimed at identifying and apprehending those involved.

Chilabi said digital forensic officers and detectives were analysing the footage to establish the identities of the individuals captured in the video.

“The Zambia Police Service has instituted investigations to identify and bring the individuals involved to justice. Our digital forensic officers and detectives are conducting a detailed analysis of the footage to establish the identities of the individuals,” he said.

He warned that the possession, display or use of offensive weapons in a manner that threatened public safety or encourages violence was a serious offence under Zambian law.

Chilabi also cautioned members of the public against using social media platforms to incite violence, issue threats or promote criminal activities.

“The Service further cautions that any person who uses social media or any other platform to incite violence, issue threats, or encourage criminal activities will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law,” he said.

The police have since urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with authorities as investigations continue.

The service said it would provide further updates once more information becomes available.
