Mizoram declares holiday for schools, half day for offices for FIFA World Cup final

Aizawl: The Mizoram government has declared a holiday for all schools, colleges and other educational institutions on Monday to enable students and employees to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final between Argentina and Spain.

The General Administration Department issued the order through an Office Memorandum dated July 19, citing the tournament’s culmination and the widespread public interest in the event. The memorandum was signed by Principal Secretary Sudhir Kumar.

All state government offices, except banking institutions, will observe a half holiday on Monday. The offices will remain closed during the forenoon and resume functioning from 1 pm to 5 pm.

The government has directed all heads of departments and offices to ensure that essential and emergency services continue without interruption and to make suitable arrangements wherever necessary.

The order was issued with the approval of the competent authority and circulated to senior government functionaries, including the Secretary to the Governor, the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, all Members of the Legislative Assembly, heads of departments, and resident commissioners in New Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar and Mumbai.

Mizoram joins Manipur, Meghalaya and Kerala which have also declared holidays for educational institutions on Monday in view of the FIFA World Cup final. The Argentina-Spain title clash kicks off at 12.30 am IST and is expected to continue into the early hours of the morning.
